Waresley Woods Closure

WARESLEY WOODS CLOSURE – AN IMPORTANT UPDATE.

OCTOBER 23RD 2020 – WARESLEY WOODS ARE CLOSED.

The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire (Wildlife BCN), who own and manage Waresley and Gransden Woods, which is an important SSSI, have advised that the woods are closed to all until further notice. This is because the recent high level of footfall combined with the autumn and early winter weather has made the main paths extremely muddy which is leading to damage to the woodland flora. Browne’s Piece and the car park are still open.

The fact that the woods are once again closed at the beginning of winter has led to considerable local annoyance, even anger. This is not because the locals feel deprived of their beloved woods. It is mainly because there is a general feeling that the Trust has mismanaged the woods. The feeling is that it is this mismanagement that has led to the closures. Local feeling is now so strong that an action group is being formed to work with the Trust. This hopes to find a way forward to better manage both the woods and the relationship with the surrounding villages.
