A Visit to The Duncombe Arms

Hello again.

A while has passed since I last wrote about our local pub, The Duncombe Arms. Well, we have been in there on a regular basis since the new folk took over last year and things have been slowly but surely improving as they got to grips with running the place.

The food has remained good and if anything has got better. The menu was changed early in 2018 and a range of promotional deals introduced to try and boost trade in the slack period after the Christmas break. These were really good, in particular the 2 – for – 1 deal on Sunday roasts between 4pm and 5pm. That is amazing value for such a really good lunch. The menu was refreshed at the same time and the Bar Food menu expanded. There are now two clear sections – Bar Food and The Restaurant, with sandwiches, melts and flatbreads available at lunchtimes as well. All good stuff

In my earlier posts I had questioned the need for two pretty solid, very similar bitters and the lack of a modern, light, golden, hoppy bitter. This has been rectified, at least in part. There is now only one hand-pulled bitter, usually Doom Bar but sometimes Greene King IPA. The introduction of bottled Honey Dew, by Fuller Smith & Turner, has reduced the need for a lighter hand-pulled bitter. There is also London Pride, again by Fullers, chilled and on gas. There is also a good selection of lager type beers on gas and bottled.

All in all good progress.
